The Body Debate, interview No. 2: Nina Malone
Nina is a model( she has done campaigns for brands such as Nike and Dior), actress, singer, dancer, mentor and co-founder of fashion production company, The Collective. She has has been working in the fashion and entertainment industries for a decade
do you think that the entertainment industries hold any responsibility at all for the way in which the wder public view themselves?
I think if defintely does, I think its the entertaiment industry as a whole, and its great we are starting to get images of 'real' people but it will take a lot more for this to have any great effect on how the public view themselves
do you think that this in turn has a negative/positive effect on the body image that the general public looking at these images have of themselves?
It really depends on you as a individual, personally when I started in this industry I had no problems with my body image, but having been in the industry this has changed and I have to keep fit ( so as) not let those negative thoughts creep in.
I think the 'real' campaigns are helping, and the real-life documentaries and shows help the public to see that the entertainment industry are as body consious as everyone else, again for anything to change it will take more fearless and confident people
What did you think of Mark Fast's move by using 'plus sized' models, do you think that more designers should do this, or do you oppose the idea?
I think if this came from a place of truth then its a great positive move, I think if it was meant as a pr stunt then I think we have to think smarter to get these views across, of course more designers could do this, but its all about working with people who are healthy and positive,
do you think that there is a place in the idealised images of female beauty/body types for 'real/normal women'?
Absolutely, there are more and more castings asking for 'real' women, which is great, hopefully they really will use 'real' women!
Do you think that the fashion/modelling industry promotes idealised images of what womens bodies should be like?
Yes I do! Its not a realistic view at all, models have the best make up, hair, styling and lighting all ready to make them look the best they possibly, then on top of this the images are altered and re touched frame by frame. So of course its not realistic but this is the industry
