Student By-Elections 2009
The third week of October brought around the academic year’s first opportunity to vote in student union elections. All that was up for election were the Departmental Representatives and the position of NUS delegate.
Departmental Representatives are the go to guys when you feel you need to mention something about your course. The Reps job is to represent your educational needs to the Students Assembly and to work with the people that run the courses (Departmental Student Coordinators and Course Representatives). The list of all the Departmental Reps is listed below, so you can find out who is yours for this year.
The NUS delegate that was up for election is a more important role outside of the college, it is their prerogative to represent Goldsmiths students on a national level. This means they are sent to the NUS Annual Conference, which is attended by delegates from universities all around the country. Here, NUS national policy is debated, ranging from issues like student top-up fees to student discounts.
This year the NUS delegate position was won by Joseph Daniels, defeating Karl Rosen Darrell and current Communications and Campaigns officer Jennifer Jones. The election of Joseph Daniels was unique in the fact that there were no spoilt votes for the post. In all the Departmental Rep elections, each post received a number of spoilt votes.
Spoilt votes are usually indicative of two things, dissatisfaction or apathy with what’s being voted on or voters simply making a mistake on the ballot. In two cases the total spoilt votes got the majority (Psychology Rep 57 to 50 and PACE Rep 44 to 62) and in both cases there was only one candidate.
A special mention must go to candidate for the English and Comp Lit Rep, Iona Twiston Davies for having such an excellent name.
