Darren Maskell

Introducing... Darren Maskell

Darren Maskell is original amongst many comedians, in the way that his set starts with a long period of silence, only occassionally interupted by the sounds of the childrens toys which he brings on stage. Armed with a MASSIVE bag of props and an even MORE MASSIVE bag of talent, he's certainy one to watch. I asked him some questions, and he replied, thus forming the following:

How are you today?

Festive. Heard my first Christmas song on the radio today.

How long have you been performing comedy?

Since july 2008

How would you describe your act?

Im still not quite sure what my act is. Ive been described at anti comedy and surreal. I dont mind that. When people talk of surreal comedy, id like to think that they are talking the end of the spectrum that includes Monty Python, Vic Reeves and League of Gentleman. I take allot of inspiration from these guys and not the sort of comedy that has been described as surreal but is just a juxtapose of two random words in a lazy attempt to create a laugh.

Who are your comedy influences?

Stewart Lee, David Cross, Sean Lock, Daniel Kitson and Paul Foot. I also think there are allot of great new acts like Brett Sharpe, Ben Target, Daniel Smith, David James, Nick Helm and Sanderson Jones. I was in Edinburgh this year for the comedy festival and some of the best shows were Andrew Lawrence, Andrew O'neil, Eric 'Tales of the sea' and Caroline Mabey

What's been your best comedy moment?

Its always nice to have compliments from audience members, but I think its much more satisfying when a fellow comedian likes your act.

What's been your worst comedy moment?

The infamous king gong show at the comedy store. Its a show filled with 400 drunk city boys with the mind set of heckling anything on stage. I am not bitter about this gig.

For some truly original new comedy, make sure you check out Darren Maskell. But for just now, why not follow his blog, 'Musings of a Croydon Shadow' at http://darrenmaskell.blogspot.com/
