Interview with up and coming bespoke tailor Samuel Dougal
Samuel, you must be over the moon at the reception your outfit for Paloma Faith received. How did she end up wearing your creations?
- Absolutely! I didn't expect it to be talked about as much as it has been. It all started via 'Twitter'... I simply told her that I'd like to design her a suit and she responded right away! She is an amazing personality with an incredible style, and has a real appreciation for quality craftsmanship.
What inspired the outfit?
-The outfit was a bespoke piece, which was designed by both Paloma and myself over a few cups of tea. The inspiration was taken from a few of her favourite films (Who framed Roger Rabbit, 2046, and The cook, the thief his wife and her lover)
Are you a fan of her music?
-Before meeting Paloma, I'd heard a couple of her tracks, but hadn't had a chance to hear more. But since, I have a real appreciation for her talent and will be seeing her perform later this month.
Was the incredible headdress one of your pieces too?
-The headdress was made by Philip Treacy who has been a big part of my life, offering me advice since 2004. It was inspired by another one of Paloma’s favourite films; The Devil is a Woman.
Has life changed much since the Elle Style Awards for you?
-Since the Elle Style Awards, life hasn't changed too much, having been featured in Elle magazine, I've had a lot of emails from potential clients, but I'm still working hard so there hasn't been much time to take it all in!
We hear you have a strong ethical stance with regards to using animal fur ( and skin?) in fashion, you must be disappointed with the recent Fashion Week shows- particularly in Paris where fur was quite a huge trend across the shows?
-I can see no reason why, in 2010 we still need fur and skins for fashion... Technology can do anything now, so for an innocent animal to undergo cruelty and unnecessary torture for their pelt is ludicrous. Fur may be beautiful, but the life of the animal is by far more so.
If a designer decides to use fur, then I feel they don't deserve to be showing at any fashion week. A lot of respect would be gained for using an alternative, which can be just as beautiful.
Current projects?
-I am currently working on a small capsule collection- using traditional bespoke methods of construction, with meticulous attention to detail and a hell of a lot of hand sewing!
What are you plans for the future- where do you see yourself in five years?
- The future seems to have a few different paths at the moment... In a perfect world, in five years time I'd love to have my own little shop where I can offer a bespoke/couture service where quality is paramount.
Any words of advice for SMITHS readers who want to work in fashion design?
-Work hard, network as much as possible, and don't be afraid to offer work for free...
